Hello Colleagues, The following updates and attachments are provided for your information.

Topic: Comprehensive Needs Assessment pilot moved forward by MDE

The comprehensive needs assessment pilot project, now being called the “ISD protocols of practice” (IRP) project is under continuing development by MDE. For the IRP Pilot Focus Team Meeting on July 26, 2011, participants in the pilot provided feedback to Steve Kailin and John Daly about the content of the ISD/RESA IRP, plus feedback to AdvancED about the electronic format. They will also begin the development of the Improvement Plan which will be piloted this fall, along with the IRP. I have attached the latest version of the Protocols of Practice document. The committee made up of ISD pilot district representatives is developing rubrics to accompany the document.

Topic: MAISA Board Approves funding for a network to support Innovative School models

The MAISA Board of Directors has approved an initiative to develop , support and scale options that include programs like early college, blended learning, New Tech, STEM programs and other models that bring more 21st century skill opportunities to students throughout the state. MAISA will be contracting with individuals and organizations to carry these out for 2011-12:

  1. Support 2010 & 2011 New Tech Network sites, with aligned support based in implementation needs such as science, technology, engineering & mathematics design elements
  2. Create communication plan, including website for Michigan Early Middle College Association (MEMCA) & IgnitED (Michigan New Tech Network), in collaboration with Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) & MAISA.
  3. Build alliances and partnerships with other state networks, such as MACUL, Project Lead The Way, International Baccalaureate, Ford PAS programs, etc.
  4. Convene Innovation Conference, led by MEMCA, MCAN & IgnitED, including other partners.
  5. Identify Innovation Zones for best practices located regionally within the state utilizing the implementation sites of MCAN, Early/Middle Colleges & New Tech Network sites.
  6. Create affiliate status for New Tech schools under MEMCA.
  7. Cultivate potential 2012 implementation sites based on community input through MCAN affiliates.
  8. Convene leadership on a quarterly basis to build capacity.
  9. Participate in leadership network for Center for Innovation in Education (CIE) public/private partnership.

Topic: The Allegan/Van Buren ISD’s proposal for a “Community College Without Walls”

Allegan and Van Buren ISD’s are taking the lead in the development of a proposal to create a Community College without Walls, ” this option once developed will provide high quality, affordable, and accessible certification and Associates Degree programs by optimizing existing facilities, staff, and other resources in a model of efficiency and cost containment.
